Hero's Journey LES in Colour Print

Individuals who perceive their lives as a Hero's Journey tend to experience a greater sense of meaning, perseverance, and grit. This LES will enable you to guide your students through the concept of the Hero’s Journey, helping them identify their personal character strengths using the VIA Institute's 24 Character Strengths. The lesson will culminate in students writing a narrative that allows them to reframe their struggles and challenges as part of their own Hero's Journey.

Objective:

  • Students will be able to identify and analyze the elements of a hero's journey according to Joseph Campbell, identify and discuss personal character strenghts and use related vocabulary to communicate with peers and write a narrative text.

  • Students will be able to relate the concept of a hero's journey to their own lives, fostering better mental health and grit.

Includes:
Teaching slides - Teach the Hero’s Journey and practice applying it to fictional character cards. *Character cards included.

Reading on the benefits of viewing your life as a Hero’s Journey with front loaded vocabulary sheet.

Character strength cards and teacher support.

Narrative writing instructions and student booklet.

EvaluatedAssessments:

Students will discuss the content with peers using discussion strips. (C1)
Students will read a text and answer questions. (C2)
Students will write a narrative text describing themselves as the hero in their story. (C3)

Throughout this LES students will also learn and practice using new vocabulary related to the Hero’s journey and the VIA institutes 24 Character strengths. Students will also learn how to write a narrative prior to writing their C3 assessment.
